چکیده

This paper studies the dynamics of a spacecraft moving in the field of a binary asteroid. The asteroid pair is modeled as a rigid body and a sphere moving in a plane, while the spacecraft moves in space under the influence of the gravitational field of the asteroid pair, as well as that of the Sun. This simple model captures the coupling between rotational and translational dynamics. By assuming that the binary dynamics is in a relative equilibrium, a restricted model for the spacecraft in orbit about them is constructed that also includes the direct effect of the Sun on the spacecraft dynamics. The standard Restricted Three Body Problem (RTBP) is used as starting point for the analysis of the spacecraft motion. We investigate how the triangular points of the RTBP are modified through perturbations by taking into account two perturbations, namely that one of the primaries is no longer a point mass but is an extended rigid body, and second, taking into account the effect of orbiting the Sun. The stable zones near the modified triangular equilibrium points of the binary and a normal form of the Hamiltonian around them are used to compute stable periodic and quasiperiodic orbits for the spacecraft, which enable it to observe the asteroid pair while the binary orbits around the Sun.

Binary Asteroid Observation Orbits from a Global Dynamical Perspective

We study spacecraft motion near a binary asteroid by means of theoretical and computational tools from geometric mechanics and dynamical systems. We model the system assuming that one of the asteroids is a rigid body (ellipsoid) and the other a sphere. In particular, we are interested in finding periodic and quasi-periodic orbits for the spacecraft near the asteroid pair that are suitable for o...

Spacecraft Dynamics near a Binary Asteroid

We study a simple model for an asteroid pair, namely a planar system consisting of a rigid body and a sphere. This model is interesting because it is one of the simplest that captures the coupling between rotational and translational dynamics. By assuming that the binary is in a relative equilibria of the system, we construct a model for the motion of a spacecraft about this asteroid pair witho...

Rendezvous Missions to Temporarily-Captured Near Earth Asteroids

Missions to rendezvous with or capture an asteroid present significant interest both from a geophysical and safety point of view. They are key to the understanding of our solar system and are stepping stones for interplanetary human flight. In this paper, we focus on a rendezvous mission with 2006 RH120, an asteroid classified as a Temporarily Captured Orbiter (TCO). TCOs form a new population ...

The Orbital Dynamics Environment of 433 Eros: A Case Study for Future Asteroid Missions

The Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)–Shoemaker mission was a milestone in that it represented the practical navigation of a spacecraft in the most severely perturbed orbital environment (relative to the standard two-body problem) ever experienced by a spacecraft. Furthermore, all future asteroid orbital missions will encounter environments similar, in some way, to the environment encounter...

Scientific Capability of Minerva Rover in Hayabusa Asteroid Mission

Introduction: The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) of Japan has launched the engineering test spacecraft \HAYABUSA" (formerly called \MUSES-C") to the near Earth asteroid \ITOKAWA (1998SF36)" on May 9, 2003 [1]. HAYABUSA will go to the target asteroid after two years' interplanetary cruise and will descend onto the asteroid surface in 2005 to acquire some fragments, which wil...
